Uncovering the Next Generation's Hall of Fame
Rolling Stone's 100 Immortals of Rock & Roll
Back in 2004, Rolling Stone magazine celebrated the 50th birthday of rock & roll by compiling a list of the 50 greatest artists of all-time calling them "The Immortals." A year later, they added 50 more to the list. Here is how they did it:
The Immortals began last year with the creation of a panel of fifty-five top musicians, historians, industry executives and critics, selected by the editors of Rolling Stone. Voters were asked to pick, in order of preference, the twenty artists they deemed to be the most significant and influential of rock's first fifty years, those whose work continues to have an impact today. More than 125 artists were named. The ballots were tabulated according to a weighted point system that was overseen by the international accounting firm Ernst & Young.
Naturally, the list is filled with performers who have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That certainly isn't surprising, but as you might suspect, given the close ties between Rolling Stone and the Rock Hall, there is a fair amount of overlap between the people who developed this list and current and former members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominating Committee (Anthony DeCurtis, Bob Hilburn, Lenny Kaye, Jon Landau, Joe Levy, Kurt Loder, Seymour Stein, Jann Wenner, etc.).
So, what can we learn from the list with respect to the Hall of Fame?
Out of the 100 Immortals, 94 are now enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as of 2019). And of the six who are not in the Rock Hall, only one isn't currently eliglble: Eminem.
Here is the full list, with the eligibility dates of the non-Hall of Famers. (Yes, we know this list is flawed -- any list like this would be -- but we're just using it to predict future Hall of Famers.) Update: We have added VH1's Top 100 Artists of All-Time for quick comparison between lists. We also added Rolling Stone's 2011 update to the Immortals list, now branded the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, which added some important artists who were missed in 2004. As of 2021, there are only 3 artists on this new list not in the Rock Hall. In 2013, Rolling Stone's editors selected 14 artists who have made an impact since the 2004 list was created that they dub the "New Immortals." Green Day was the first of these artists to be inducted, when they became first ballot Hall of Famers in 2015, and Pearl Jam followed in 2017.

Alright, so we seem to no longer have the posts ranking the most recent inductees to the side categories...so I'll need everyone to post a ballot again. Simply rank them where you feel they belong on the current list. Posted by Casper on Sunday, 03/17/2013 @ 00:32am |

Oh, and those VH1 lists made for some great comedic material. Ranking marginal johnny-come-latelies like Rage Against the Machine, Mariah Carey, Pearl Jam, Jay-Z, and Green Day among the greatest artists, while omitting far more significant names like Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams Sr., Bill Monroe, Billie Holiday, and Buddy Holly, is a total travesty. Nirvana's place on that list is not that hard to figure out. Rolling Stone has absolutely rammed them down their readers throats for years. Eventually readers react to this. On top of that, music has gone in a different direction. They are from when rock bands still roamed the earth and still got airplay. Posted by Cheesecrop on Thursday, 05/16/2013 @ 05:57am |

As we analyze the phenomenon that is Zach, here is my take. I like Zach the poster. In many ways, he comes across as quite intelligent and knowledgable, and I always applaud anyone carrying the torch for music of days gone by. Zach, of course, frustrates me as well in that he comes across as seeing things in very black and white terms, whereas the world is really shades of grey. He will make very smart comments about 50's-era music, but then try and overstate his points by foolishly dismissing The Beatles, or entire other eras. Why should Zach be respected when he obviously doesn't respect others whose views differ from his? This is what gives the internet a bad name when we condone behavior that we wouldn't tolerate in person. This just serves to enable the mentally unstable with their superiority complexes to abuse other innocent people the minute they disagree with them under the cloak of anonymity. Who are we trying to kid? In real world situations calling somebody an a***ole for expressing views that don't agree with ours sure as hell warrants dismissal. Try doing that in a courtroom, a classroom, or in the workplace if you don't believe me. Posted by Not the Administrator on Tuesday, 05/21/2013 @ 19:45pm |

Administrator, you're just flat-out wrong. I'll confess to verbally attacking Chalkie, Paul in KY, GFW, and classicrocker. However, if you take the time to read the full discussions, you'll notice that they provoked me first, either by making potentially libelous comments or insulting me. I can generally let such remarks slide by, but when Paul in KY makes thinly-veiled Nazi comments about me (Godwin's Law, anyone?), I can't let them go uncontested. I have to defend my character because there is no reason for keyboard assassins to use their PCs as safe havens to defame others. Posted by Zach on Sunday, 06/2/2013 @ 23:30pm |

The past 23 years just don't offer the quantity and quality of what came between 1900-1990. What musical movements in the last decade alone can compare favorably with the Jazz Age, the swing era, the British Invasion, rock 'n roll's first golden age, bebop, honky-tonk country, postwar electric blues, rockabilly, the punk/new wave explosion, U.K. glam rock, etc.? I just don't see anything recent (meaning the last five or so years) that can be spoken of in the same breath as Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven Sessions, Elvis Presley's Sun Sessions, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (See Dezmond, I can be objective about The Beatles), or Hank Williams' 1947-1953 run. Posted by Cheesecrop on Monday, 06/3/2013 @ 06:39am |

I've come to a conclusion. Rock and Roll existed before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame so it shouldn't matter if some members of bands are left out when their bands are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Andrew, come on. I would be fine with your list if was presented as simply "here are my favorite artists in order." That is completely subjective and purely taste. But in your post you stated "in which I picked artists who I think have made a high impact on the world of music." OK, so you are trying to make some sort of historical assessment on influence and importance. Just to pick an example, you have Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson and Charlie Parker listed as much less important than, say, Simple Minds. Posted by Dezmond on Wednesday, 11/20/2013 @ 12:10pm |
So in other words, if I read your list and introduction correctly, you are saying that Simple Minds, Kenny Loggins and Dylan's son in The Wallflowers (226) have had a bigger impact historically on music than Bob Dylan (740), Jimi Hendrix Experience (739), Michael Jackson (737) and Charlie Parker (735)? Is that really your argument? Posted by Dezmond on Wednesday, 11/20/2013 @ 12:20pm |

Except this is not an exemplary job by Andrew. I'm sorry but it just isn't. Again, it would be fine if it were a personal list of favorites. But he claims it is supposed to be in order of importance. That implies an attempt at historical analysis and some objectivity. You spend hours taking it apart. Here's another one: Whitesnake at 148, while ELLA FITZGERALD is at 229. One of the most important singers in jazz history is 81 spots less significant than freakin Whitesnake. Billy Joel should not be in a top 100, let alone top 10. With all due respect, Bobby Darin was a fantastic rocker. Also among the first of the rock'n'rollers to experiment (and successfully) with different styles and formats of music, incorporating them into rock'n'roll music. It's similarly what we've since hailed Paul Simon's solo efforts for, and among the things that they could be inducting Linda Ronstadt for next year. Also, not too bad a songwriter either. He was much more than a pretty boy or "safe Elvis". Posted by Philip on Saturday, 11/23/2013 @ 17:44pm |
I'm not dissing him, but MBV are the forefront act of shoegaze, and have had a pretty sizable influence on indie rock. Posted by GFW on Saturday, 11/23/2013 @ 17:52pm |
GFW. I try to be respectful in my posts, and try to be open-minded. That said, I had to fight the urge to laugh out loud at just at the word "shoegaze". Obviously not a sub-sub-genre I'm familiar with, but even after reading about it, it's just one of those things that's so fringe, that it's barely worth noticing (unless you really love it, which I'm guessing you do). Being influential on indie rock is certainly important, though I think being influential in the mainstream is more important, and I think Mr. Cassotto has the edge there. Chris F, in correcting this list, I'm going to go with the list that Dezmond reconmmended and I'll throw in a few other artists too. Posted by Andrew on Saturday, 11/23/2013 @ 19:58pm |
DarinRG, that's a good response. I think the difference between major and minor (in terms of regard for shoegaze) is literally the Pond. From what I've read about it, it's a lot like mod: started in Crumpetland, short-lived, considered influential and innovative, had a resurgence a decade or two later, but never really traversed across the choppy waves to Yeehawstan. Which makes MBV about on par with the Small Faces. HAR! Then again, I wouldn't object to MBV getting inducted either, but for that relative lack of carriage, I could never rank them much, if any, higher up. Posted by Philip on Saturday, 11/23/2013 @ 19:58pm |

Andrew, I appreciate you taking my suggestions seriously and to heart, but you misunderstood my advice. Read the NOTE at the bottom of that last post more closely! I said "NOTE: When I say "higher", I mean ranked more important, although I guess that would be a lower number. Whatever. You know what I mean." You moved most of my suggestions way to the back! Chris F. said better what I meant to say (and he listed almost all of the ones I listed). They need to be moved "up" (as in closer to 1) by several hundered spots at least. Oh, and The Smiths needs to be moved up a lot as well. They were a key 80's band and it is a real head scratcher as to why they have not been nominated for real yet. Posted by Dezmond on Sunday, 11/24/2013 @ 06:15am |
Enig, it is funny that you instructed Classic Rock and me to make arguments for AC/DC based on logic, yet in your response above most of your reasons against them seem to be based on personal taste. Like this one: "My main objection to their higher ranking, arises from the present vocalist, Brian Johnson's need to scream in what has been referred to as the 'manner of two cats fighting.'" Funny coming from a fan of the vocals of Geddy Lee. (I joke, sort of. You know I like Rush a lot). Posted by Dezmond on Sunday, 11/24/2013 @ 06:45am |

Since I suggested two going up I am going to suggest two go to the bottom of the list. I think of all the artists that I am seeing on the list the new number 742 should be Dexy's Midnight Runners. They barely escaped one hit wonder status here in the States they did better in the UK. But not well enough to compensate for their shortcomings elsewhere. I would say either Sufjan Stevens (who I love and hate to suggest it) or My Chemical Romance should be at 741. All though the three may be interchangeable. Enigmaticus, I must ask you the same question that I asked Andrew. Is your list a list in order of your personal favorites (in which case it is fine), or are you trying to give an objective assessment historically and as far as influence goes? If that is the case, do you seriously contend that, among other things, that Bruce Springsteen (105) is less significant than John Denver (49) or Pat Benatar (85)? How do you justify that? Or that Radiohead (200) is less important than Starship (187)? Starship!?!?!?! Posted by Dezmond on Monday, 11/25/2013 @ 12:49pm |

Especially #1's, but I think there is a bit more validity to using top 40 tracks as a factor. Yet I would still put it towards the bottom. Posted by Gassman on Monday, 11/25/2013 @ 20:06pm |
It's not the only way, but it is a good way. #1's are flavors of the month, like pumpkin flavoring is right now, but a continued steady presence is indicative of one that is broad and wide in its impact...like chocolate. And it's also more honest in a way, in that its not pretentious or dismissive of other people who don't agree with them, like other scense tend to be (hint: irony detectors should be going off right now) Posted by Philip on Monday, 11/25/2013 @ 21:19pm |

Actually Darin, the irony was on my part, poking fun at myself a little. The point for me though, is that Billboard and Cashbox and the like are using the best bad method for measuring cultural impact. Sales are easy to manipulate, and radio airplay was heavily corrupted, then became much more sterling, then became homogenized to the point of uselessness. Nevertheless, it's a decent attempt to measure cultural impact of an artist. That should be something important, especially when having a Hall Of Fame, or compiling a list of "Most important (acts/guitarists/drummers/songs)." If anything our recent mini-discussion of shoegaze should punctuate that heavily. Posted by Philip on Monday, 11/25/2013 @ 23:33pm |

I think a lot of it depends on the observers primary musical interests and focus. I'm more swayed by, say, an artist being consistently name dropped by artists who came after them than I am by charts, but I was also most largely moved and influenced by artists whose careers tended to be more word of mouth launched before they became woven into the larger narrative. Someone the generation ahead of me (I'm an Xer) who came up in what Little Steven refers to as the "pre-artform era" would logically be more swayed by chart success based on its importance in the era that was most impactful to them." Billy Joel. John Mellencamp. Paul McCartney. Cat Stevens. Neil Diamond. Garth Brooks. Cher. Journey. The Carpenters. Fleetwood Mac. Steely Dan. Dire Straits. Chicago. Bon Jovi. Frank Sinatra. Phil Collins. Peter Gabriel. Kenny Rodgers. Glen Campbell. Linda Ronstadt. Mariah Carey. ABBA. Barbra Streisand. Peter, Paul and Mary. These are just some of the excluded and they are immortals. I don't know who does the voting but they are forgetting some of the most talented top selling groups and artist in the history of modern music. They are responsible for uncountable Movie, TV and commercial media sountracks and cover music because their work IS in fact, immortal. Many of the names on the Rolling Stone list will be forgotten in twenty years. Cat Stevens songs still find their way onto soundtracks thirty years after his last hit record was recorded. John Mellencamp is still at it and his songs also can be heard on a regular basis for soundtracks in TV and movies. I know nobody will read this so I'll stop here with one final thought, John Lennon is on the list but Paul McCartney isn't. Really? Posted by Dave on Saturday, 08/2/2014 @ 21:20pm |
Uh, about half the names on your list have been inducted. It literally would've only taken about two minutes of research to find that out, maybe even less. Posted by DarinRG on Saturday, 08/2/2014 @ 21:52pm |

Two British bands and two American bands who first charted in the 1960s: The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and Chicago. They are the top four charting Rock And Roll bands of all-time on both, the Billboard 200 albums chart and the Billboard 100 singles chart. Today I will look at the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. The Beatles are number one overall by far. The Rolling Stones are a close second. Further down the list are the Beach Boys at a distant third. Chicago comes in at number four, and they have a high mountain to climb to get close to the Beach Boys. Overall on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, the Beatles are # 3, the Rolling Stones are # 5, the Beach Boys are # 12 and Chicago is # 24. The Beatles will always be the number one band on the list, the Rolling Stones will always be number two, and the Beach Boys will always be number three. That will never change. Chicago is a little iffy on holding on to that number four spot forever when its got bands like the Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith and the Grateful Dead on its tail on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Pink Floyd has a new album coming out soon. When the last Bee Gee Barry Gibb dies, the Bee Gees albums will re-chart even higher and maybe new greatest hits albums will be produced and the Bee Gees will continue to duke it out with Chicago for that number 4 spot. VH1's 1997 list of the 100 Greatest Artist of Rock And Roll, which was voted on by the musicians themselves, included all the bands I mentioned above, except for Chicago. Also, all the bands I have mentioned above are in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, except for Chicago. Chicago is not as popular with contemporaries, critics and the public as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys are. Also, the Beach Boys are not as popular as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Beach Boys have a lot more in common with Chicago than with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. A lot of the Beach Boys later albums failed to crack the top 40, just like a lot of Chicago's later albums failed to crack the top 40 as well. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones never had those issues. The Beach Boys though, attained something that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Chicago never did--a number one live album! Chicago had more number one albums than the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys and Chicago toured together in the 70s and 80s. Did the Beatles and the Rolling Stones ever tour together, or perform together at least one concert? Posted by Roy on Monday, 08/18/2014 @ 00:06am |

Roy, I do not think that Rolling Stone Magazine hates all of those bands, as much as they do not fully appreciate them. They certainly did like Yes, Jethro Tull and Foreigner, but they had been swept up in an appreciation of "punk" over "prog," or "classic rock." How can PAul McCartney again be left off of this list? Hey may be all pop, but he has more records, awards, number 1 hits After the Beatles than many of these people combined. He is heads and tail better than Lennon except at being murdered. He is the first Rock and Roller to be nominated for an Oscar [has anyone else ever?] Band on the run is a classic and his production is second to none. Wings dominated music on the radio thru the late 70's and early 80's as one of the top ten best ever. He pioneered many recording processes used today and is basically a hit making machine all by himself. Lastly does anyone who listens to music not know who he is? I'm wondering if RS were to revisit this list now if Eminem would still be Top 100... While I do think he's a likely first ballot HOF inductee, I don't believe ANYBODY would place his musical output ahead of some of his contemporaries, such as, say, OutKast, Foo Fighters, The Roots, or Beck (none of whom made their list)... Would he even place ahead of Kanye at this point? Posted by Johnny DuBiel on Wednesday, 09/9/2015 @ 23:48pm |

For those interested, I've revised my Top 100 Favorite Recording Artists list over on RYM. Lots of new names added to the list, primarily in the new wave, jazz, and soul/R&B genres (The Church, The Psychedelic Furs, Michel Petrucciani, Scott Joplin, Etta James, etc.). A couple have dropped off the list completely, not because I no longer derive pleasure from their music, but simply because they don't interest me as much as they did previously. Anyway, enjoy reading and share your thoughts. Posted by Zach on Tuesday, 10/13/2015 @ 20:49pm |
And for comparison's sake, My 50 Bubbling Under Names. Expect to see some of these crack my Top 100, either at the bottom or halfway through the list, soon. No special rankings here. I just added 50 acts who I like but haven't evaluated enough to determine if I'll add them to the main list. Lots of great artists on both lists if you're looking to expand your horizons (My iTunes library contains over 100 years worth of material, almost 10,000 songs strong). wow, RS really despises Paul McCartney. Lennon in the top 10 and Macca not on the top 100? WTF did Lennon ever do except the execrable "Imagine"? He gave up on the Beatles around SPLHCB, so anything they did after that is attributable to McCartney. Name a Lennon Beatles' hit after SPLHCB: you can't, because he didn't write any. McCartney continued to have #1s throughout the 70's and even a few in the '80s. This list is way too heavy on old-timey black artists due to political correctness. The Drifters? Please. RS never has been worth a crap when it actually came to the music. They should stick to rape hoaxes, that's what they do well. Posted by docweasel on Thursday, 07/7/2016 @ 10:58am |

Three bands with similar cases. Success before, during, and after a non-original vocalist member was with the band. The only thing that hurts your list of 2+ time inductees is that the following bands will never be inducted: Posted by Classic Rock on Tuesday, 10/11/2016 @ 22:05pm |
Yes, that's the real reason I argued against Roy. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Foo Fighters will all be inducted long before most of those classic rock acts, although there's a chance Irons and Cameron won't make it in twice (they might not be seen as 'important' enough Pearl Jam drummers.) I was right about Gregg Rolie. He will be the next 2-time inductee. Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 14:03pm |
IF Journey makes it this year (which would honestly surprise me a little) I have a feeling they would only induct the Escape/Frontiers lineup. They've been opting towards inducting fewer people from bands than they did in the past in the past several years. If Dave Abbruzzese isn't going to get inducted with Pearl Jam, I find it unlikely they'd include Rolie in a Journey induction. Posted by Sean on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 18:35pm |
It's already been established that Gregg Rolie is being considered for induction with Journey. Go read Journy's Rock Hall nominee bio, and the Rolling Stone article on this year's nominees. It appears they are leaving out Dunbar!! Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 19:30pm |
Sorry, Dunbar is being included for induction. I will post the link on the Journey page. Posted by Roy on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 19:42pm |
Wow, that's a slap in the face to Abbruzzese then. Vs. and Vitalogy were MASSIVE, both critically and commercially. Admittedly, the band fired him for being too conservative for them so maybe they're trying to prevent an awkward reunion there. Posted by Sean on Tuesday, 10/18/2016 @ 20:16pm |

Joel Peresman is suggesting a second ceremony for 50s-60s artists. I don't know if he means there will be two separate nomination ballots and two induction ceremonies each year, starting next year. Posted by Roy on Monday, 10/21/2019 @ 22:14pm |

WINNERS OF THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME FAN POLLS (2013-PRESENT) Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 11/6/2019 @ 05:04am |
I think we should have an "Afro-American Funk N' Roll Hall Of Fame" so we can include such marvelously talented people as Rick James And The Stone City Band and The O'Jays. (Prince was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, but his music was different from Rick James' music, plus Prince has always appealed more to a white audience, as do so many on the lists posted up above). Why are Martha & The Vandellas no longer on the list of the Top 100 Artists of All Time ? They were listed higher than The Supremes on the 2004 list...but now, as of the 2011 list ,they have been TOTALLY REMOVED. WHY ?? Posted by Bill G on Thursday, 04/30/2020 @ 17:54pm |
Let me get this straight. 100 greatest artists of all time and Fleetwood Mac is not even on the list? Talking Heads barely makes the list at #100? Man, it's sad what's happened to Rolling Stone. They were great once. Posted by Mike on Wednesday, 07/15/2020 @ 21:44pm |

If only they had inducted Andy Anderson with The Cure, they would not fall under the category of "All White Male Groups". That is on the RRHOF, not the band, honestly. Posted by eboe on Friday, 03/26/2021 @ 00:53am |

Only 4 out of the 29 current members of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nominating committee are black: James Bernard - The Source Magazine, Reginald C. Dennis - The Source Magazine, Tom Morello, and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. I guess they are the ones nominating rappers. Dave Grohl and Tom Morello are also the ones nominating heavy metal bands. White Heavy Metal bands are having trouble getting inducted, while black R&B groups are having trouble getting nominated. Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 02/9/2022 @ 15:18pm |

THE NUMBER OF YEARS AN ARTIST HAD TO WAIT Posted by Roy on Thursday, 05/5/2022 @ 11:23am |
It's kind of funny how eric clapton is the lone triple inductee and over the last 15 or so years hus reputation has just sunk. Like most of his works fell of the rolling stone 500, prominent music figures like Anthony Fantano and Phoebe Bridgers have called him grossly overrated when compared to his contemporaries, guys like Thurston Moore and Kevin Shields have overtaken him in terms of influence, and his infamous rant has became way better known in light of BREXIT. The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame should make induction addendums for certain bands and announce them at the induction ceremonies, but the inductees would not attend. They would just have their names added as inductees with their bands on the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame website, and their Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame trophies would get mailed to them with the year they were supposed to be inducted included on the trophies, not the year the addendums were announced. Unlike the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, you can vote on who gets inducted into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame every year. If you are not a member of the music industry, you only qualify for Lifetime Membership, which will cost you a one-time payment of $1000.00. You will receive the ballot in your mailbox every year and you can attend the ceremonies. Here is the application to become a member: Posted by Roy on Saturday, 11/26/2022 @ 14:49pm |
The Rock Hall should follow the Song Hall and offer lifetime membership to non-music industry people for $1000.00 to allow them to vote every year on who gets inducted. Posted by Roy on Saturday, 11/26/2022 @ 15:16pm |
