32 comments so far (post your own)"Whip It" kind of destroyed their chances to get into the hall of fame, which is a shame. Devo were innovators Posted by Marth on Monday, 01/21/2013 @ 18:02pm |
RIP, Alan Myers. The beat of Devo. Posted by Paul in KY on Thursday, 06/27/2013 @ 07:42am |
Devo's first single, Mongoloid, was out in 1977. So they were eligible in 2002 (the 2003 ceremony). Posted by Florian on Tuesday, 10/29/2013 @ 06:30am |
What if Devo is inducted before Kraftwerk? Posted by Roy on Wednesday, 11/13/2013 @ 07:31am |
People calling DEVO a novelty act need to just stop trying to have opinions on music. Really, stop talking. "Novelty" is Pac-man Fever, Disco Duck, Do the Bartman--eg, briefly lived pop fads involving non-musicians. DEVO have released MANY albums. Typical ignorance of people who don't look beyond mainstream radio. Posted by jfon on Friday, 02/7/2014 @ 07:27am |
And to corey, I mostly agree with you, except for comparing DEVO to Skrillex and the like. "Dubstep" seems to be British ghetto dance club nonsense with no roots in the new wave/post-punk that DEVO emerged from (and helped innovate). I'd rather attribute that stuff to a combination of Afrika Bambaata and Italo-disco if I had to pick (not to say that these acts were ghetto, but Dubstep seems to have been created by British "chavs"--plus look at it's recurrence in hip-hop now). Two of their members just passed away within the last year. That might spur the Hall of Fame to nominate them again this year. Posted by NixtonV on Thursday, 07/10/2014 @ 11:45am |
Among all the underground punk bands throughout the 70s Devo was the most subversive of them all. Their vignettes of decadent American life were paralleled by none and misinterpreted by many. They truly were the pioneers that got scalped. Their first 2 records are generally perceived as excellent by the punk standards, and when they achieved international acclaim due to the 1980 single Whip It from the Freedom of Choice album they seamlessly transitioned to a fully synthetic instrumentation hugely influential and utterly brilliant. As well as the incredibly challenging experimental music from their early days compiled on their wonderful Hardcore Devo compilations. Posted by jdog on Friday, 01/15/2016 @ 13:48pm |
"Whip It" kind of made the case for Devo's induction and killed it at the same time. On one hand, it changed them from just another obscure-but-influential group into a group with small (but still existent) commercial success, and incredible influence. On the other hand, it's video and lyrics made them a novelty act in the eyes of the public. Posted by Max on Saturday, 05/21/2016 @ 18:35pm |

They would be in the Hall of Fame right now if people - mostly radio/ music casual listeners -didn't mislabeled them as a "One-Hit Wonder." I essentially hate that term a lot. Posted by The Dude on Thursday, 03/22/2018 @ 13:42pm |

Thity-eight years later- the fact that "Girl U Want" didn't even chart is just mind boggling. Such a genius bit of ear worm pop: Posted by Shrek on Friday, 10/12/2018 @ 13:12pm |
Kraftwerk and Devo on the same ballot, how do you feel about that? Posted by Roy on Sunday, 10/14/2018 @ 01:58am |
Devo could possibly be a sixth inductee. People are kinda sleeping on them. But I expect them to induct the only New Yorker on that list (LL) because "New York". Posted by Timothy Pernell on Monday, 11/19/2018 @ 10:39am |

Today, May 4, 2020 is the 50th Anniversary of the Kent State murders at the campus, on May 4, 1970, and Jerry Casale of Devo was one of the protesters who was participating that day, and had a very first hand account of the inexcusable atrocities committed by the Army National Guard, murdering 4 innocent students. There is an excellent article in Rolling Stone today, according to the statements of Jerry Casale. Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders was also a student there at the time. 2 weeks after the tragedy, Neil Young wrote the song "Ohio", and with him and Crosby, Stills, and Nash, combined all of their artistic abilities and focus to get the song recorded and released as a Single, ASAP. They also recorded "Find the Cost Of Freedom" as the B-side, and got the record out, and performed it shortly afterward in concert. Today is a monumentous day in U.S. music, political, and revolutionary fight for freedom history, and I encourage all to investigate these articles and honor those innocent, fallen students gunned down by our own Military.. NO OTHER BAND ON THIS PLANET can garner up so much justified angst towards the "system" obviously corrupt gone wrong while at the same time bring forth a wellspring of goodness, hopeful, light, and life. Their track record of EXCELLENCE speaks for itself. I DEMAND THEY BE INDUCTED once and...FOR ALL!! Wake up, Spuds! Andievo4U2 Posted by Andie Hammett on Wednesday, 05/13/2020 @ 22:57pm |

Along with Tull, BÖC, and Television, Devo are one of my favorite bands not to be in the hall. I feel like they'll keep getting nominated though, Dave Grohl has mentioned in interviews that he keeps pitching for Devo, along with Bad Brains. I can imagine Lenny Kaye and Seymour Stein supporting his bid, and they'll probably keep getting nominated until they're in, hopefully as soon as possible Posted by Will M on Monday, 01/9/2023 @ 17:58pm |
I have a gut feeling that Devo will be inducted in ME in 2024. Posted by joyful noise on Wednesday, 05/24/2023 @ 19:49pm |
