4. ELO -- (Years eligible: 16) Has any other band in history blended rock with the sounds of a symphony orchestra any better than Electric Light Orchestra? The skill that frontman/producer Jeff Lynne used in crafting out radio friendly hits like "Evil Woman", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Hold On Tight" and "Don't Bring Me Down" (pre-digital era) is still unmatched by anything out there today.

Another Saturday Night Live alumnus along with Adam Sandler is a big fan of ELO and Jeff Lynne with quotes like, "Well, I'll tell ya Jeff, to fans like me, where you're on the Mount Rushmore of musicians", "40th Anniversary of ELO and obviously one of the greatest bands of my lifetime", "When I wake up I always think of The Beatles because as a kid growing up they were like an institution, but I'm telling ya ELO right there on the same one hand with them" & "God, every freaking song when I hear it I have to turn it up, it's the best, 50 million plus worldwide." Couldn't have said it any better myself Dennis Miller!

I've never liked Dennis Miller. He's too whiny and arrogant for my tastes. ELO, on the the other hand, is a fantastic band, regardless of whether that punk Miller likes them or not.

What a TOTAL RIPOFF they were! At the time ELO was a favorite for me,,,and others. Went to the OUT OF THE BLUE concert only to find out later it was all lip synced !!! They could not recreate their music live so instead they pulled a Milli Vanilli..before Milli Vanilli !!! Jeff Lynne..you still owe me and all the fans that went to your Fake Show with the lasers and flying saucer stage. You totally got what you deserved by Sharon Osbournes Father, Don Arden! Serves you right. To those who don't know and or were not at the show in 78'/79', you could literally see Jeff Lynne turn away from the mic while his vocals were still coming out of the PA...IT WAS A FULL RECORDING ON TAPE from the album...you could tell!!! The solos were the only live part of the show. Oh well..I was 17 years old and a young musician starting out since 10 years of age. I really don't care if there are doubters...there are always people that don't want to think that something like this could happen, but it does and it did. Interesting how people forget and how the facts morph /change into something different.Why am I sharing this? Simply that I want People to know what I experienced at my second concert that was ELO: OUT OF THE BLUE TOUR. I and many others got to listen to our album
played in a giant auditorium with a light show and a flying saucer for a stage with fog and some solo spots. Who knew...? Oh yeah...the entire band knew!

I also saw ELO play on the 'Out of the Blue' tour (Hall & Oates as opening act) & I loved them, lip-sync or no.

Unlike Milli Vanilli, at least I knew they had created it & sung it in the studio when making that titanic album.

Congratulations, it's about time, but it should have been Electric Light Orchestra, now this does not bode well for an ELO induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as they will also want a Jeff Lynne solo one under either Non-Performer or Musical Excellence!

Holland Dozier Holland, Jeff Lynne, Rick Springfield to Receive Stars on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has revealed the list of celebrities who will be recognized with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014. Among the honorees are a number of luminaries from the music world, including the famed Motown songwriting and production team Holland Dozier Holland, Electric Light Orchestra frontman Jeff Lynne, pop-rock star and actor Rick Springfield and pop-funk artist Ray Parker Jr.

Lamont Dozier and brothers Brian and Eddie Holland were responsible for composing some of the most memorable pop songs of the 1960s. Among the Motown artists they wrote classic hits for are The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and Martha and the Vandellas.

Lynne was a member of The Move before becoming the guiding creative force behind ELO. In addition, he's an acclaimed producer who's worked on albums by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Joe Cocker and the supergroup Traveling Wilburys, of which he also was a member.

Springfield is best known for his chart-topping 1981 tune "Jessie's Girl" and also had more than a dozen other top 40 hits, including "Don't Talk to Strangers" and "Love Somebody."

Ray Parker Jr. hit #1 in 1984 with "Ghostbusters," and he also released many other successful singles as a solo artist and with the group Raydio.

Among the other music artists who also will receive stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame next year are Katy Perry, late rapper Tupac Shakur and Mexican rock band Mana. Right now, there's no information as to where the new stars will be located, or when they will be awarded.

Mike Edwards had an interesting life to go along with his unusual death. He studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London before joining Electric Light Orchestra in 1972, playing with the group until January of 1975. Upon departing ELO, the eccentric musician became a sannyasin of the philosophical discipline of Osho and changed his name to Deva Pramada, which means "divine contentment."

He lived simply for the rest of his life in various communes around the world, eventually settling in Devon, England. Pramada died on Sept. 3, 2010 on the road near his home in Devon when a bale of hay weighing 1300 pounds rolled down a hillside and collided with his van.

I have looked over the list of artist that are in the Rock N roll Hall of Fame. I can see about 30 that have no business even being nominated but are in there. I look at list of artist that are not in there and there are literally hundreds that should have been in long before The Stooges, Velvet Underground, Public Enemy and I could go on for days. Electric Light Orchestra and the albums that Jeff Lynne has produced should be enough alone. But The Rock Hall is a joke and will continue to be a joke. Go up to any normal person on the street and ask them to tell you one single song by The Stooges and they will probably say Three Blind Mice or that Alphabet song. Thinking of course of Moe, Larry & Curly. Who was responsible for that vote. Should be shot in the back of the head!

Casey Kasem's American Top 40 - The 80's from September 3rd, 1983, is on all this weekend...

"You know, legendary disc jockey Alan Freed is often credited with coining the term rock and roll, but Alan Freed was responsible only for popularizing it, the phrase rock and roll was 1st heard publicly in a song that was a hit back in 1934, that's 20 years before the rock era began, in the mid-50s, it was a title of a hit record by the Boswell Sisters, and here's a piece of it, that record by the Boswell Sisters was a hit 49 years ago, it's title, Rock and Roll, but, it wasn't until 20 years after that, until the mid-50s, that the expression rock and roll took on the meaning it has today, DJ Alan Freed, when he was working in Cleveland, 1st used the expression to describe the contemporary music by black artists whose records he played, and that was the sound, that became the foundation for the billion dollar industry known as rock and roll, this week the latest song to pay tribute to rock and roll is at #31 in our survey, here's E.L.O. with, Rock 'n' Roll Is King" - Casey Kasem

to Billboard he will be bringing ELO to the
States.

"I had so much in Hyde Park with 50,000 people,
where I just played in September, first time I've
played in 28 years it was fantastic and I loved
every minute, so I'm definitely gonna come here
and play."

As for when he says, "Not too long." His manager then added it will be in 2015.

It won't just be a greatest hits celebration, as
Lynne said he is working on new music under the
ELO banner. "I'm working on a new album and
that'll be involved in the new times when we
play."

Of course even the old stuff is somewhat new to
Lynne, as the songs have evolved and he has
different appreciations for those seminal ELO
hits nearly three decades after he last played
them as ELO.

"They always take on new meanings and some of
them I wrote 40 years ago, some of them I wrote
35 years ago and some of them 30 years ago, they
all become something slightly different as the
years go by," he said. "Some that I thought are
very straight forward aren't at all. I sing them
now and I realize what they're about and it's
usually about grim stuff like relationships and
crap relationships," he added.

So are there any now that he really understands
better than he did during the first ELO run?
"Yeah, I wrote it before I met my second wife,
but 'Evil Woman' turned out to be a prophecy in
me own lunch time."

Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from December 18th, 1976, was on SiriusXM 70s on 7 this weekend...

"This is Casey Kasem on American Top 40 in Hollywood, and now I have the latest hit by an English group who have found one of the most unusual theatrical gimmicks yet for a rock and roll concert, the group is, The Electric Light Orchestra, and we got the story from drummer Bev Bevan who tells it this way, at the end of their concert in Los Angeles last August the group returned for a final encore, and right in the middle of their song, the audience saw a huge hot air balloon rise up from behind the stage, it sailed over the audience up around 200 feet, and it had a large mirrored revolving globe dangling from its underside, then, 4 laser guns shot thick rays of green light at the ball as it slowly whirled around, creating the effect of millions of green raindrops falling all over the audience, and the surrounding hills, well the crowd went wild, and so did the local residents who looked outside and saw this, huge, eerie, green revolving ball of light hovering over the hills, well Bev Bevan said the police switchboard was swamped with phone calls from hundreds of frightened people who thought that they were witnessing the landing of a flying saucer, fortunately the group was prepared for that kind of reaction and they warned the police department in advance to tell folks exactly what it was, well we can chalk that one up as one of the most unusual gimmicks ever used at a rock and roll concert, by The Electric Light Orchestra, their current hit is moving up the chart at #19 this week, and it's titled, Livin' Thing..."

ELO and Jeff Lynne as so deserving to be in the R&R Hall of Fame, how many musicians in the music business then and know has done what he has done and the music that ELO has brought us for 40 plus years. To those that keep bringing up the lips sync incident which was in Detroit, my hometown, in 1978, do me a favor and take the advice of Elsa, "Let It Go"!! It was 40 some years ago.

In addition to Duran Duran, The Moody Blues, Yes, Sade and Carly Simon, I have also been an active supporter of E.L.O.'s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. What I think may be needed for a nomination is a documentary about Electric Light Orchestra, along the same lines as The Moody Blues' "Legend Of A Band," or Rush's "Beyond The Lighted Stage." Does anyone know if such a documentary exists?

ELO would be in Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame if they had joined up with Elvis Costello or The Pretenders. ELO wont make it RRHOF in the next 5 years. Some legendary bands Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Alice In Chains,STP, Beck, Tupac, Black Crowes, etc will be ready for induction plus important bands Duran Duran, The Cure, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, should be inducted. Jeff Lynne definitely should be inducted in the Musical Excellence category. ELO and The Cars are 2 bands that need their fans to galvanize and show their support. KING

I think ELO is one of those "rainy day" acts. They're saving them to help lift an otherwise weak ballot. Imo, that's what happened with Neil Diamond and SRV&DT... maybe not consciously, but one they'll haul out that will pretty much walk in.

I really have not written that much about E.L.O. yet. I was introduced to the music of E.L.O. first on "Solid Gold" in 1979, then via the "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Xanadu," one of my first cassette tape purchases as a Freshman attending the University Of Arizona majoring in Architecture in the autumn of 1980. My second roommate at the U of A had also liked E.L.O.

Much like Rush, I have been familiar with E.L.O.
for the past 36 years. Do I think that Electric Light Orchestra deserves induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame? Absolutely! Would I support their induction? Yes. But are they going to get my vote over Duran Duran? No. Over Yes?
No. Over The Moody Blues? No. over Sade? No. Over Carly Simon? No. Those artists are my top 5 choices; they will not change. However, I think that there is still a great probability that E.L.O. will be inducted next year, even if I will not be able to vote for them.

My appreciation for the music of the Electric Light Orchestra goes back almost 4 decades. I had first discovered the music of E.L.O. via the song 'Don't Bring Me Down,' at the age of 17, in 1979.

I was 8 years old when E.L.O. was formed. I was 12 years old when E.L.O. had released "Eldorado." I was 18 years old when I had purchased my first cassette and quasi- E.L.O. album.

It was because of my interest in the music of this soundtrack that I was re-introduced to the music of Rush via "Hemispheres." I had purchased "Time" when I was 19 years old.

Electric Light Orchestra is the major "art rock" band of the 1970's; Duran Duran is the major "art rock" band of the 1980's and beyond.

I, for one, am very interested in purchasing "Alone In The Universe." I was extremely impressed with the Bluray version of "Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra Live In Hyde Park." As far as E.L.O.'s studio albums are concerned, my last purchase was "Time." Unfortunately, I have not heard "Zoom."

Not having Jeff Lynne or ELO in the R&R HOF is like not having Pete Rose in the baseball HOF, a complete joke. I cannot remember the exact number, but they had something like 27 top 40 hits between 1972 and 1986. That is an extremely large period and number of hits. You still hear ELO on the radio all the time as well as commercials, movies, and television shows. They also had a unique style of music that influenced many future bands, which should be considered. Jeff Lynne has worked with and produced so many other HOFers. He is the only Traveling Wilbury member not inducted. All you have to do is hear what fellow musicians have to say about Jeff to know he deserves to be in. Tom Petty said Jeff is "the best all around musician he has ever been around." He also said when Jeff helped him produce his album 'Full Moon Fever', "it was like going to recording college being around Jeff Lynne." Come on voters, the time has come to vote this legend in!

After hearing "Hold on Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back in 1981 while with family around Ventura, California, a US Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 34 years ago!

Tomorrow will mark the 35th anniversary of my first two cassette purchases: "Lost In Love" by Air Supply and "Xanadu: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack." About a week later, I had purchased "The Grand Illusion" by Styx on cassette. My favorite songs from the "Xanadu" soundtrack are: 'I'm Alive,' 'Xanadu,' 'Whenever You're Away From Me,' 'Magic,' 'Suddenly,' 'All Over The World,' 'Dancing' and 'Don't Walk Away.'

Ironically, it was probably because of the song 'Xanadu' that I was reintroduced to Rush's music approximately two weeks later.

Jeff Lynne didn't write, "every song that that name has ever done,” Roy Wood came up with the E.L.O. name, wrote four songs for The Electric Light Orchestra debut album No Answer and invited Lynne to join The Move so they could all, including Bev Bevan, work on ELO as a side project, then there were cover songs like Roll Over Beethoven, In the Hall of the Mountain King, etc! >:-(

Electric Light Orchestra, the symphonic rock band led by production wizard Jeff Lynne, returns in November with Alone in the Universe, its first album since 2001’s Zoom. And, in a sense, Lynne — who recently said he did “all the singing and playing” on the collection — was alone: None of the band’s founding members joined him for the recording, which he’s releasing under the moniker “Jeff Lynne’s ELO.”

But, as Lynne tells EW, the name tweak doesn’t matter much. “I wrote every song that that name has ever done,” he explains by phone from London. “I think it’s a shame to throw it away, because it is my legacy.”

Lynne’s right. The signature sound ELO perfected in the 70s and 80s — shimmering guitars, orchestral swirls, and infectious vocal melodies — has remained intact on tracks he’s shared from Alone. But where “When I Was A Boy” and “When The Night Comes” applied Lynne’s style to balladry, “One Step at a Time,” streaming exclusively below, ratchets up the pace.

“I didn’t have quite enough up-tempo” songs, Lynne says. “It’s got some very intricate chords in the verse, which I like a lot, because it’s sort of old-fashioned music but with a regular rock and roll beat.”

That cross-section of influences stems from Long Wave, the album featuring covers of artists like Charlie Chaplin and Rodgers & Hammerstein that Lynne released under his own name in 2012. “I learned how those old masters used to write those songs, because I learned every part on every instrument to make the record,” he says. “It taught me different ways of reaching the same place but going a different route.”

That’s just the latest in a series of projects, among them producing records for the likes of George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Regina Spektor, that have contributed to Lynne learning “a hell of a lot since the first go of ELO” ended decades ago and eliminating the “slight guesswork” he says characterized his earlier recordings.

“The whole album represents these new chords and just the thrill of it,” he says. “I know how to get a sound exactly as I want it, and I know which way to get it.”

There are a variety bands that have there own unique and distinctive sound . That are not apart of main stream music or traditional radio music . Yes , the Moody Blues are two examples of a unusual sounding bands . Electric Light Orchestra has managed to keep its unique and distinctive orchestra sound ,and have its music heard on the main stream (pop)ular radio .

On Tuesday, November 24th, 2015, we inducted "Fire On High" into The Song Project ironically when it was Bev Bevan's birthday, co-founder along with Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne of The Electric Light Orchestra, ELO's drummer from 1970-1986, also The Move, Black Sabbath, then ELO Part II, hope he had a good one!

When the song is played in reverse, the message, in a masked heavy voice (performed by ELO drummer, Bev Bevan), can be heard stating, "The music is reversible but time is not. Turn back. Turn back. Turn back. Turn back."

Don't see ELO getting in over King Crimson, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, or YES. Jeff Lynne deserves a Musical Excellence award for his many contributions to music. They don't seem to be a priority for the Hall. The Prog bands have tough sledding for some reason. I remember hearing about ELO and the award show. They were going to be a slam dunk nominee. It didn't happen. Probably YES, Moody Blues 1st. KING

Jeff Lynne deserves it more as a member of Electric Light Orchestra first because without ELO's influence, popularity and publicity in The 1970's and 1980's, there would have been no other opportunities for his many contributions to music after 1986!

I am also a huge advocate for E.L.O.'s induction.

As I had stated previously, I have been an aficionado of
E.L.O.'s music since 1979, the same year that I had first been
introduced to the music of Rush. In the case of Rush, it was while attending the Heart Seminar at the UA College of Medicine in Tucson, Az in February, 1979 ,however.

My introduction to Electric Light Orchestra was via the song, 'Don't Bring Me Down' on the tv show "Solid Gold." My parents went to the store that day, whereas I had committed the crime of turning on the television to watch "Solid Gold." I am mentioning the Electric Light Orchestra, because the "Xanadu"
soundtrack was one of my first cassette purchases, almost 35 years ago.

As far as I am concerned, Electric Light Orchestra is the major "art rock" band of the 1970's; Duran Duran is the major "art rock" band of the 1980's and beyond.

I, for one, am Interested in hearing, "Alone In The Universe." I was extremely impressed with the Bluray version of "Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra Live In Hyde Park." As far as E.L.O.'s studio albums are concerned, my previous purchase was "Time." Unfortunately, I have not heard "Zoom" nor any albums since, with the possible exceptions of various compilations.

In my honest opinion, Electric Light Orchestra and especially Jeff Lynne, deserves immediate induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, along with The Moody Blues, Duran Duran, Yes, Sade and Carly Simon. Let's get them all inducted in 2017!

I think it hurt ELO with their hiatus when other bands continued on like Moody Blues & Yes etc. It might have hurt The Cars for several years but they regrouped and made a strong album a few years ago. Now The Cars received a nomination. The Cars should get in before ELO. With the difficulty YES the band has being inducted, it might take 10 years before ELO is nominated and inducted. KING

You are right, it did hurt Electric Light Orchestra, but since then (2013-present) ELO have regrouped, presently tour to sold out crowds, headline at places like Glastbury, Fonda Theatre, The Hollywood Bowl and Wembley next year (2017) as Jeff Lynne's ELO with a strong album called Alone in the Universe from 2015 with another one coming soon, so I say strike while the iron is hot, not 10 years from now when E.L.O. will be back on hiatus!

40 Years Ago: ELO Finally Break Through With ‘New World Record’

Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra had been building toward the breakthrough success of A New World Record for some time. But first there was some housecleaning to do.

Released in September 1976, the album offered Lynne a chance to reclaim a piece of his legacy with the Move, ELO’s predecessor band, with a muscular remake of “Do Ya.” (Roy Wood and Lynne left the Move to form the Electric Light Orchestra in 1969, taking drummer Bev Bevan with them.) They also took a moment to mock ELO’s early Wood-dominated experiments with orchestral music on the overtly operatic “Rockaria.”

“I’m really pleased with ‘Rockaria,'” Lynne told Melody Maker in 1977. “It’s a tongue-in-cheek look at classical rock, but it is a rocker, and I think it’s the best in the rock tradition that we’ve done. It’s a new-style rocker.”

In fact, the Electric Light Orchestra had been determinedly moving toward that new style – and away from ostentatious songs like “First Movement” – since the departure of Wood, who led the group on its debut album. “When we first started ELO, there was a lot of pretentiousness with the music,” Lynne admitted in the 1977 interview. “I was doing stuff that I didn’t really want to do but doing it all the same. I thought I should do it because it was cool, man. It was experimental, but there was no direction to it.”

Four albums followed over the next three years, as the Electric Light Orchestra searched for the right musical mixture of Lynne’s love of early rock ‘n’ roll and the Beatles with his interest in strings. Lynne finally came to a simple realization: “It had this grandiose name, the Orchestra,” he later acknowledged. “And really it was just this group with a cello in it.” That breakthrough of simplification, along with a shifted lineup and the maturation of Lynne’s songwriting voice, made all the difference.

By 1975’s Face the Music, they cracked the Top 10 in the U.S., but were still being roundly ignored back home in the U.K. A New World Record, which boasted three Top 20 Billboard hits — including ELO’s first-ever gold-selling U.S. hit, “Telephone Line” – changed all that. “Livin’ Thing,” powered along by one of Lynne’s most inventive choruses, became the band’s highest-charting U.K. single to date.

“I wrote so many songs so quickly in that 1974-78 period, and it was like a conveyor belt, really,” Lynne told Jon Kutner. “I was just banging them out. But I’m particularly pleased with ‘Livin’ Thing,’ because I like the chorus, it’s really interesting. I think it’s interesting because there is one chord change [just before ‘higher and higher, baby‘] that makes the whole thing work – and if I hadn’t found that it would never be a song.”

Lynne finally had his first platinum U.S. smash, as A New World Record rose to the Top 5, but – more important to the band’s Birmingham-born leader – his first-ever U.K. Top 10 million-seller. “I’m just pleased that it’s happened at home,” Lynne told Melody Maker. “I’m just chuffed. It’s suddenly happened and I accept that. I don’t look any deeper than that.”

Well... why not? Certainly by last year's Dazed and Confused standards, ELO should be a shoo-in: They were a regular chart presence for the majority of the '70s, they're respected album artists, and you can't listen to classic-rock radio for an office round-trip without being smothered by their violins. Hell, auteur Jeff Lynne was in the Traveling Wilburys -- a co-founder! -- the RNRHOF-iest supergroup in the museum's history by an exponential margin. You could say that the lingering (if silly) whiff of novelty about the band might hold them back their first time out -- all the spaceships and indoor sunglasses and whatnot -- but expect Brooklyn audiences to be rolling their "R"s along to "Don't Bring Me Down" at an induction ceremony soon enough.

Odds: 2 to 1

I want to say that ELO have a very good chance of being Inducted this year in the Class of 2017. Yes I know I rooted for the Moody Blues a lot. But they didnt make it. i accept that. I did say in a Post bfore The nominees were announced that ELO had more hits. Also I forgot about all that respect Jeff Lynne has in the Music industry.

I am a huge Yes fan but if there is to b One prog act inducted it will b ELO. There is enormous support for Jeff Lynne as well as his group. A lot of Veterans will vote for ELO. Veterans who arent even prog fans. I can think of several.

I do agree that inducting only 4 members of Electric Light Orchestra is somewhat unusual. However, I am not certain how many of the former members other than Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Richard Tandy and Bev Bevan had actually written the songs. We know that for the most part, Jeff Lynne was the creative genius who had written the majority of Electric Light Orchestra's lyrics and music. Therefore, he is the critical member. This may also explain why the late John Rutsey was not inducted as a Rush member, etc cetera.

Chris Groucutt, Kelly's son, also Marge Raymond, she did background vocals on ELO's 1975 album Face the Music, have both clued me into specifics about Electric Light Orchestra former member's real contributions to the Jeff Lynne songwriting/recording process that Jeff Lynne has denied those guys ever since Jeff Lynne got royalties after suing Don Arden around 1979-1980, but Jeff Lynne never shared that money with the band, because of Jeff Lynne's greediness between himself and his then wife Sandi Kapelson, so there was justification for an ELO Part II, that's all I can elaborate on! >:(

Groucutt was a critically under-appreciated backup singing presence in the platinum-era Electric Light Orchestra sound. In time, the late bassist even took over for a handful of lead vocals with ELO before departing in 1983. He later led a series of spinoff groups.

A violinist during the classic ELO period of 1973-79, Kaminski played on their first two gold-selling U.S. albums – and their first three platinum blockbusters, beginning with 1976's A New World Record. Later, he became known for rocking a blue fiddle.

I call bullshit, the tell-tale sign is that Bev Bevan finally called out the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame over snubs of former Electric Light Orchestra members Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell and Mel Gale, though I'd also add Louis Clark, over 20 years wasting my time for nothing! >:(

PS-The Electric Light Orchestra 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction has now gone way beyond a tragedy, it's a grotesque farce, even Charlie Brown couldn't have screwed this one up like all those involved, I would never pay or go to see it, MAYBE I'll watch only IF their offer is for free. :'(

Casey Kasem's American Top 40 - The 70's from March 19th, 1977, was on this past weekend, comin' up, I have a hit by an English group whose leader says he hates working with the classical musicians who give the group their (giggle) distinctive hit sound, ironically their first hit was, (laugh) Roll Over Beethoven, I got details comin' up, the hits from Coast-to-Coast, American Top 40, this is Casey Kasem on American Top 40 in Hollywood, and now, I have the current hit by that English group who several years ago became the first rock band to include symphony musicians in their regular lineup, but whose leader and chief songwriter Jeff Lynne says, he actually hates working with the classical musicians who give the group their sound, now the group is The Electric Light Orchestra, and here's the way Jeff Lynne explains their dilemma, when the band 1st got together they started out by hiring professional string players to help them achieve the new sound that they were trying to create, but Jeff says, those hired hands, all English union session players, were more concerned with their hourly wage than the music they were making, and he says it took 4 long years before they finally found 3 symphony musicians, who really fit in with the sound and the goals of ELO, well when they did, they made them permanent members of the group, but, ELO's problems weren't over, because when they went into the studio to record their Eldorado album which features a big lush orchestral sound, they had to go out and hire a 30-piece section of, that's right, you guessed it, professional union string players (laughs) and how did the session go, well here's the way Jeff Lynne describes it, he says, I never saw anything like it, it's terrible dealing with classical musicians, they only play by the hour, and on one track of Eldorado you can hear the double basses putting their basses away while we were still playing, because they were overtime (giggles) end of quote, well fortunately ELO is very happy with their own string players, cellists Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale, and violinist Mik Kaminski, and this week they move up 5 with their latest hit, here's The Electric Light Orchestra and, Do Ya... 8-)

These guys were weirdly bombastic and leader Jeff Lynne is an uncertain talent. But boy there’s some force in “10538 Overture,” beauty in “Can’t Get It Out of My Head,” something ineffable in “Telephone Line.” None of it’s subtle, though, and there is enough nonsense in the 1980s (Xanadu and “Mr. Blue Sky,” for starters) to undermine Lynne’s claim to substance, even before he went on to become a noted, and obtrusive, producer to so many household names that induction became a foregone conclusion.

The cello player at the heart of many early Electric Light Orchestra live performances, Hugh McDowell, has died, according to several online reports. His passing, on November 6, was confirmed by his former ELO bandmate, Mel Gale. McDowell was 65. He performed on the band’s recordings throughout the mid-to-late ’70s as they ascended the worldwide albums and singles charts.

Gale, a fellow cellist in the group, wrote on his Facebook page on November 7: “I’m sad beyond words to have to pass on the news that my old friend and fantastic cellist Hugh McDowell passed away last night after a long illness.

“We met in our mid teens and were close until we left ELO in 1980. He was a beautiful free spirit, had such a natural gift as a cellist and just a lovely bloke.”

McDowell was present at the very first ELO concert, which took place on April 16, 1972, at the Greyhound Pub in Croydon, Surrey. The lineup at that time consisted of Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Bill Hunt, Andy Craig, Mike Edwards, Wilfred Gibson, Richard Tandy and McDowell.

McDowell left ELO within the band’s first year and joined Wood in the latter’s new group called Wizzard, but returned to ELO after a short time. He then stayed with the group for several more years, credited as Hugh McDowall on the band’s 1974 album, Eldorado and on their 1975 follow-up, Face the Music. By 1976’s A New World Record and 1978’s double-LP, Out of the Blue, his surname was spelled “McDowell” in the credits.

Hugh Alexander McDowell was born July 31, 1953, in Hampstead, London, and began playing cello as early as age four. At 10, he won a scholarship to the Yehudi Menuhin School and he began performing professionally shortly thereafter. McDowell attended the Kingsway College of Further Education, the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and played with the London Youth Symphony Orchestra, the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Orchestra and London Youth Chamber Orchestra.

McDowell as 19 when he accepted the invitation from ELO leader Lynne to join his new band. After his brief time with Wood in Wizzard, McDowell returned to the ELO fold and stayed in the group until 1979, until Lynne decided to stop employing a string section. McDowell later returned one more time to perform with Electric Light Orchestra Part II in 1991.

McDowell continued to play with various groups and classical music ensembles after leaving ELO, and guested on recordings by Mel Gale, Asia, Geoff Downes, John Wetton and others. He also did arrangements for various artists and worked on film, dance and theatre projects. He was also involved with computer programming and created a music composition program called Fractal Music Composer in 1992.

Sad that Bevan didn't have the guts to come to the U.S. to be on the same stage as Lynne at the induction ceremony. I don't care that over the years he'd been involved in multiple business and legal disputes with Lynne. I don't care that he hadn't personally spoken to Lynne in over 30 years. Get on a plane, stand there for a few minutes, accept your little award, do your little speech, and then leave. No fuss, no muss.

Instead, he stayed home and made up a ridiculously lame excuse for not showing up.

Now compare him to Bun E. Carlos the year before. Carlos had been in recent litigation against the other members of Cheap Trick, and he couldn't stand to see their faces. The bad blood was still fresh. But not only did he show up for the induction, he then also played on stage with them even though the mere sight of them made him want to vomit! Then he promptly got out of there and flew home, and the other three did the backstage post-ceremony photo shoot and media stuff. Bun E. had guts.

The only thing Bevan deserved that night was the 2017 Pussy of the Year Award. A trophy smelling like rotted fish and shaped like a giant vagina.

While I agree with you about Bevan's ridiculously lame excuse, he'd originally wanted to come, but made a complete 180, at least he did mention former ELO members Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale on his Facebook page who were among 8-9 snubs by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, unlike Lynne who's just as bad for not even mentioning any other band member except Roy Wood, Bev Bevan along with Richard Tandy, another no show, then also he spoke about Dad, so Jeff Lynne deserves an identical giant vagina award that smells like rotten fish!

Perhaps there are still tensions between Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan, due to Bev Bevan's desire to continue playing ELO music as ELO part II, or The Orchestra? All non-inducted members of that ensemble were former members of Electric Light Orchestra were they not? With the exception of Bev Bevan, none of those other members had been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. So, perhaps Jeff Lynne had excluded them for this reason?

Louis Clark, Who Orchestrated ELO and Later 'Hooked on Classics,' Dies

Louis Clark, a musician who conducted and arranged the orchestral music for the Electric Light Orchestra in the '70s, and later introduced pop music to the masses with the quirky Hooked on Classics series recorded with London's Philharmonic Orchestra in the early '80s, died Saturday (February 13, 2021) in Ohio. His death at age 73 was announced by his wife, Gloria, on his Facebook page. No cause of death was revealed but he had been ill for months and had suffered from kidney issues.

Where preceding records had built orchestral sections with overdubs, ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne opted to live up to the band's name when he hired Clark as string arranger and utilized a full orchestra in the group's recordings.

Beginning with 1974's Eldorado and its big single, "Can't Get it Out of My Head," Clark conducted the strings and co-arranged the music with Lynne and ELO keyboardist Richard Tandy.

Their collaboration continued with 1975's Face the Music ("Evil Woman," "Strange Magic"), for which Clark also began to work on the choral arrangements; 1976's A New World Record ("Livin' Thing," "Do Ya," "Telephone Line"); 1977's two-LP set, Out of the Blue ("Mr. Blue Sky," "Turn to Stone," "Sweet Talkin' Woman"), 1979's Discovery ("Don't Bring Me Down," "Shine a Little Love"), and the 1980 soundtrack for the film, Xanadu.

Clark then took his talents to a series of albums that offered uptempo disco-fied pop treatments to classical songs. The series, Hooked on Classics, first introduced in 1981, was a huge success. The title cut, a medley of such compositions as Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," was an unlikely pop hit, reaching #10 on the Hot 100, #2 in the U.K. and Top 10 in many other markets. The album, on RCA Records, reached #4 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. It was marketed via K-Tel's ubiquitous TV commercials and reportedly sold ten million copies. Its success led to multiple follow-ups.

Clark was born February 27, 1947, in Bedfordshire, England, and graduated from Leeds College of Music, with a degree in orchestration and arranging. During his career he also contributed string arrangements on such recordings as Ozzy Osbourne's "Diary of a Madman" and Roy Orbison's final album, Mystery Girl.

Since 2000, among other endeavors, Clark has also performed with The Orchestra, which features former members of Electric Light Orchestra and ELO Part II.

In her post announcing his death, his wife Gloria wrote, "This morning he watched premier league soccer and listened to The Beatles, two things he loved. This afternoon I told him I loved him, he said I love you too, and we kissed. He was gone five minutes later."

The snubs on this one make absolutely no sense. While Roy Wood did found the band, he was only on the first album and not one song where he was the major contributor got ELO this recognition. Mik Kaminsky and Kelly Grocutt at least should have been included. Including Roy Wood is like the Beatles inducting Pete Best but excluding Ringo…

Chris Groucutt, in his own words from my Facebook friend chat that began December 2015!

"Firstly my dad said Jeff doesn't need any help writing ELO songs. Which is true.. But that doesn't mean he didn't have any help. He doesn't need help writing at all.. But he has consistently collaborated with many other writers over the years and so it was in the studio - he just never credited anybody. Don't get me wrong.. The vast vast majority of the melody and lyrics were Jeff. But he had lots of input.. The core band were there most of the time and all hands were on deck.. My dad was constantly at the studio in Germany when they recorded.. He wasn't making the tea. In fact I actually have ELO master tapes here at the house... That he took away to listen and work on.. He was involved not in every step.. but in many of the steps for a lot of the material... and certainly was a significant contributor to the creation of those records.. The rest of the material involved massive contributions to the recordings... And yes that does mean musical creation and in many many cases involved songwriting. I myself witnessed the process more than once at Jeff's house/studio. I remember distinctly a session where they were all playing at his house and throwing ideas in. Including my dad playing guitar.. And then Jeff disappearing to aside rent room to write the lyrics and melody.. That process is entirely and legally classed as songwriting because it's entirely impossible to judge where the creation of said lyrics/melody comes from.. Also there is one particular song that always stuck with my old man. That he maintains and swore that it came from an idea he was playing around with on guitar and Jeff loved it and took it and developed a whole song from. And the guitar part remained in its entirety apparently. Which meant in no uncertain terms that he instigated and co-wrote the whole song. Regardless of the fact that he wrote not a single word of that song or melody.. But.... It's impossible to to quote this online, because it's in no way possible to back it up with any evidence. I remember him distinctly telling me about the event, but not the actual song for definite... My recollection is that it's Strange Magic... The guitar intro at the start... But don't quote me on it lol. I also recollect that he put that guitar part in this song - but in reverse.. to make a point..

Well my Dad did try. Fans suggest that it was settled out of court because he didn't have a case. Actually the opposite happened. Kelly spent a couple of years going after him... And eventually when the case clearly showed merit.. Jeff offered a settlement. Which was ridiculously low.. But the experience all but destroyed my dad. He was in a massive depression... Absolutely stone broke.. And literally had to stop. Lack of money. It depends on your understanding of how bad he was. I remember him spending weeks at a time on the living room sofa.. Not once getting up except for toilet. It destroyed him. About 2 years of serious depression... And you'll take anything. Well it was a combination of things. Lack of money being the major thing. He couldn't go into a shop without being recognized. But had no money by 85-86. His marriage had fallen apart with my mother.. About to lose house. His album was a flop obviously that was his last money. That's what serious depression will do. The offer was 300 k plus ongoing promotion and support. Which meant that he could save the house' give him some money in his pocket to promote his second album. Plus... My dad's manager was an idiot... But ultimately he just took it to get it over with. As it happened he thought the 300 k was enough to get him out of the hole.

Well this will will blow your mind Rick. My old man was on 40+ million records. How much do you think made for 10 years and 40 million records? Well let's say an average album price in UK for mid 70's onward was £3.50. About half of that goes to the creators. So there's £1.75 to split. If even half of that went to Jeff for being the main man the rest of the band would have had maybe 10 p per copy each. I know of some session players who have had that from a record. That would have been a minimum of £4 million for records alone. Then there's the tours obviously.. In actuality. There was more, with single sales as well.. But lets just say that.. But in reality for 10 years work. It came to less than £400 k. £40 k per year. For being in one of the most successful bands of the 70's. But to be fair.. There was an occasion in the mid 70's when ELO were huge. That Jeff's car broke down near here. And he didn't have enough money to fix it or have it towed. And he had to phone Don for help. And complained.. How come he's selling all these records and can't afford a car. And Don said don't worry - I'll get you a car. And he did. Rather than him having any money.. lol. So they were all in the same boat to some degree... Then when Jeff finally got control of his publishing and recording royalties he had promised that the band would be fairly split. For the recordings. And then he didn't. And that was 'the meal'. And that was the beginning of the end. Because Jeff had a return of £11 mil and then had ongoing massive royalties coming to him. And he didn't do the right thing.. Either what he should have done.. Or what he actually promised.

Well my mother who was involved with it all swears it was the influence of Sandy that screwed it all up. Jeff's girlfriend once she realized how much money was at stake, she apparently was the one who stopped Jeff sharing it. But it makes no difference really.. He should have split it. My dad made far much more money from ELO Pt 2. And yet... Even though I know what he did, and how badly he treated the people who helped him get there.. I still can't dispute the beauty of his music. And actually my dad, till the day he died always said he wouldn't never deny his talent or the wonder of his songs. Lord knows how he managed to survive that kind of betrayal.

But I will say this... Jeff Lynne has presided over one of the greatest rock and roll scandals of the 70's and has pretty much got away with it... Don Arden is largely part of the current problem, and why Jeff is like he is.. Don ripped Jeff and the band off for untold millions in the 70's and when Jeff finally started receive what was due to him, he didn't share what was due to others. Resulting in an event known as 'the meal' in our house. When Jeff successfully sued Don Arden and received a huge payout for lost royalties and of which around 60% was promised to the band that wasn't Jeff/Bev/Richard equaling at least a million each... But ended up being announced at the meal as £5 k and that was the beginning of the end.. And Jeff still worked with Don after that as well lol. Such is the music business. I guess very late 70's. Indeed, showbiz is very dirty to the bone. But so are places where the little guys who make this world go around work, like me. I've just texted somebody the date of the meal... May be a while to get the answer lol. It was definitely post-OOTB. Mik was there I've just been told... So it's likely that Hugh and Mel were. My answer has just come back between 77 and 80 lol. Doesn't narrow it down too much. But def post OOTB.. And maybe post Discovery. Anyway none of this can be stated online... Because it will gin back and forth for eons with no resolution. The simple matter of the fact is that it's easy to see that ELO as it is now bears little resemblance to the ELO of the 70's. That's not to say it's better or worse, it's a very different thing. But its obvious to anybody with half a brain that Jeff did not do any of those big things back in the day by himself.. Either in creation or composition... He used people intensely in the creation process. It's so utterly ridiculous to suggest otherwise...

Well actually fans have taken anecdotal evidence about a couple of songs that have been widely reported that Jeff did it all... One is Don't Bring Me Down.. Which Mack told the story of its creation in the studio overnight... Well that comes from one article with Mack I believe.. That Jeff did it on occasion.. And is largely true. Another is 'The Lights Go Down' which is largely the result of Jeff's demo that survived almost intact.. There were likely a couple of others... Which is fine.. But fans extrapolated from that the rest of the vast output of ELO was therefore the same story which obviously they were not.. The reasons those stories exist is because they were outliers, an exception to the rule, and story worthy. Fans make that sound like he did it all the time.. Which is daft. Jeff did play some keys and piano yes.. But frankly he isn't that good.. Richard is an exceptional keyboard player, and Jeff is bash out chords player. It's pretty evident from his later work that he is a basic piano player at best. And it's well known that Mel Gale played the piano on Wild West Hero. Because he was better than all of them. Mel Gale was a wizard pianist. You know the honky-tonk piano at start of Wild West Hero.. That's Mel. If you look at live videos of Wild West Hero and Roll Over Beethoven you'll see Mel switch to piano in some shots. Tandy was exceptional though.. And there is zero chance that Jeff could develop those lines. He was able to recreate them years later using the technology we have now.. Cause you can play it in step by step on a sequencer.. But back in the day.. No way. Well it's significant that the strengths that the players had are absolutely evident when they were involved.. It's abundantly clear when Louis was involved. Of which Jeff has tried to take credit for before.. And there is absolutely no way he composed those sections. When you hear other things that Louis has composed (not just orchestrated) it's perfectly clear who wrote that side of things. That was all Louis. Jeff has actually been on record saying that he and Richard arranged it all. Which is bull. He's like this because ELO Pt 2 got up his nose. And since then has been consistently blanking the former members and their contributions. Well if that band was in existence now it would be a different affair.

The famous example is Young at Heart by The Bluebells. At the start of this song there's a violin riff. That the session player (who wasn't a member of the band at all... unlike Kaminski in ELO) was asked to come up with something for the start. And he just improvised that. Years later it was deemed that the violin was so significantly recognizable as a part of that song that he was awarded songwriting credit. Now there is absolutely no way that Mik was dictated to regarding those violin parts on tracks like Livin' Thing. He came up with those, exactly like I've seen him do dozens of times on my dads stuff and ELO Pt 2. And nowadays you would have a songwriting credit. But back then nobody had any education.. The person who got the money was the person who put the claim in.. Now that is actual 'songwriting' which means you would collect publishing royalties which are huge regardless of songwriting, anybody - and that means ANYBODY - who contributed to the recording of a record. i.e. You play an instrument on a track. Really should be on a cut of the actual physical sales of the said record. But no ELO member did. All the contemporary bands of the time had splits... But none of them did.. Even Jeff didn't get any for years. Until they went after Don... Who had pocketed 10's of millions. It would never happen now.. And was rare then... So basically... They didn't receive recording royalties.. When they should have without question.. And they didn't receive publishing royalties.. Which is a different argument as to what constitutes the songwriting. And my argument is that it's clear that many people had significant contributions to the actual writing of those songs... That it should also be an issue..

Never once would anyone have dictacted to Kelly what to play.. It's a ridiculous assumption. Jeff would strum chords.. And Kelly would create everything from there.. Jeff would say what he liked.. But never once did he tell him what notes to play.. That is well known. To suggest otherwise is absurd.. Otherwise you just wouldn't have any musicians there. He has ridden long and far on the wave of those albums which he categorically did not create single handed.

Funny thing with Zoom... I didn't really like it when it came out... Me and dad listened to it, and we both were a bit underwhelmed by it.. Short Pop songs with no real large scale vision... But over the years I've really warmed to it... And actually I rate it very highly now... I just had to listen to it with different expectations.

Well yeah.. I have never had a problem with him using the name. I actually think the moniker Jeff Lynne's ELO is a mark of respect to the original lineups. Makes a distinction that it's something new. And things change. ELO now is a different thing. And that's fine. It is a bit daft I agree to call the album ELO in any shape when there is little of the original 'idea' of what ELO was supposed to be.. But meh.. it doesn't fuss me that much. Well I think the impetus was really about the Hyde Park show last year.. And because that happened, there was a new brand born, and it would be sensible to start using it. I don't think he had any intention of recording an album under the name. All indications are that he was going to do a Jeff Lynne album. Then scrapped that due to the massive response to the gig. So it does make sense kinda. What would have been better entirely is if he had written those songs.. and then got Mike Stevens involved.. and Donovan and a Richard Tandy and actually made it a new ELO. Give it a year or two and it would've been a proper band. I mean he could've just rerecorded them all.. Cause apparently that's what he always did.

Well considering the chap playing with them now still ****s up the bass parts, I'm pretty sure they're all Kelly's bits too.. And you can't mistake Mik's violining.. He could outplay all the orchestral players you could hire in his hey day. It's just Jeff as usual.. His modus operandi has always been that it's not good enough for him to win.. Everyone else has to lose. Pity really.. Cause he comes across in interviews as a humble guy with no ego... But those that know him.. Know that's a complete act. He actually isn't a bad guy if you're on side with him... But he is ruthless as well.

And I've made it clear to everyone.. I'll be friends with anyone regardless of their opinions - with one exception.. If anybody says 'Jeff is ELO' or agrees with somebody saying - or likes a statement that says it.. then they're gone.."

Early ELO engineer Dick Plant kindly dropped a line to Yours Truly KJS earlier this week with some warm words in tribute to Louis Clark. You'll find Dick credited for his engineering skills whilst at London's iconic De Lane Lea Studios on four consecutive Electric Light Orchestra studio albums, namely "On The Third Day", "Eldorado", "Face The Music" and "A New World Record". His comments in response to the ELOBF article "Remembering Louis Clark" are quoted in full below thus:

I agree that he should have had more composer credits on certain ELO stuff. On more than one occasion, Jeff used Lou's top string line as a main part of a song melody, but Lou was only ever credited as an orchestral arranger. Not fair.

Very sad early loss of a great and mega-talented guy.

After hearing "Hold On Tight" on Casey Kasem's American Top 40 Mighty 690 AM Radio Show back around August 1981 while with family near Ventura, California, a U.S. Route 101 road trip to Santa Barbara's Mission when I was just 8 years old, Dad then bought me my very first Electric Light Orchestra album from Tower Records, an audio cassette of Time by ELO, thus started the fandom 40 years ago! :-)

Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from August 15th, 1981, is being rebroadcast by Premiere Radio Networks this weekend, "Now on with the countdown, #33, leaping 6 notches on American Top 40 to #33, here's the 17th Top 40 hit by ELO, Hold On Tight...ELO, the English act on American Top 40 and there are 5 of 'em this week, Hold On Tight, their 2nd week on the chart, moving from #39 to 33, 6 big notches, as the countdown continues" 8-)

PS-I really wanted a release of Time's 2 LP Legacy Edition more than ever for sentimental reasons as Dad died on April 7th, 2020, not COVID, but collateral damage of it. :'(

Richard Price (born 10 June 1944 - 17 May 2022) was an English bassist who played with various Birmingham-based rock bands, most notably Sight and Sound, the Move (1969–1971), and Wizzard (1972–1975).

Career

Price was born in Birmingham. His first band were the Cimarrons, who were inspired by the Shadows. He then moved on to the Sombreros, who later changed their name to Sight & Sound and moved in a more psychedelic direction. He began collaborating with Mike Sheridan as a songwriting partnership. Price joined the Move in 1969, staying with the group for two years, including an unsuccessful tour of the United States. He also contributed bass tracks to the early sessions for the debut album of ELO, but for reasons that are unclear, none of his bass parts ended up in the final mix of the album when it was released in 1971.

After leaving the Move he signed a contract with Gemini Records; he then recorded (with Sheridan) the album This Is To Certify That, released in 1970, and a solo album, Talking To The Flowers, in 1971. He then joined former Move colleague Carl Wayne in Light Fantastic, before forming Mongrel with future Wizzard drummers Charlie Grima and Keith Smart.

He joined up again with Wood in the latter's new band, Wizzard, with whom he had two British #1 hit singles, "See My Baby Jive" and "Angel Fingers", as well as the #4 Christmas classic "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" (all 1973).

After Wizzard split up, he joined the Wizzo Band on pedal steel guitar in 1975, but they broke up in 1978. Price was also a member of The Rockin' Berries from 1990 until his death.

Price was married to Dianne Lee of the 1970s duo Peters and Lee. The couple toured as a duo, performing hits and new songs.

Rick died unexpectedly on 17th May 2022.

Jeff Lynne's ELO Announce Final Tour: 'Over and Out'

Jeff Lynne's ELO have announced their final tour, dubbed "The Over and Out Tour." The 27-date excursion, produced by Live Nation, will kick off in Palm Desert, CA on August 24 and travel across North America before concluding in Los Angeles on October 25.

Artist presale will begin on Wednesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. local time and the general onsale will start on Friday, March 22 at 10 a.m. local time. Exclusive VIP experiences will be available March 20 at 10am local.

While no international dates have been announced, it seems likely the group will tour Europe and possibly other territories following the North American shows.

"A brilliant catalog returns to U.S. stages and gives the strings-starved people what they want," Variety wrote of the group's previous tour in 2018. "The ELO catalog speaks for itself… and it was a glorious thing to behold… in a 19-song set that reprised the closest thing to truly Beatle-level pop the 1970s had to offer."

ELO — originally named the Electric Light Orchestra — was formed in 1972 by singers/multi-instrumentalists Lynne and Roy Wood and drummer Bev Bevan from the ashes of legendary rockers the Move, with the intention of fusing rock music with classical instruments. Wood left after one album and Lynne assumed leadership of the group — taking on lead singer, songwriter, producer and guitarist roles — which went on to score such massive hits through the '70s as "Evil Woman," "Strange Magic," "Living Thing," "Can't Get It Out of My Head," "Mr. Blue Sky," "Telephone Line," "Don't Bring Me Down" and more.

The group officially disbanded in 1986 and Lynne went on to a solo career and extensive production work with George Harrison, Tom, Petty, Roy Orbison, Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Bryan Adams and even the Beatles' two new songs on their 1995-96 "Anthology" series. With Harrison, Petty, Orbison and Bob Dylan, he was also a member of the 1980s all-star group the Traveling Wilburys. Lynne is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Lynne revived the ELO brand in 2001, with himself and longtime keyboardist Richard Tandy as the only remaining early members, for the album "Zoom" (featuring Harrison and Starr) and tour. He did so again in 2014 and has toured extensively and released two albums with the group, 2015's "Alone in the Universe" and 2019's "From Out of Nowhere."
