You would think that the Rock Hall would be in a mad rush to induct someone like Tina Turner for her solo career.

Ike and Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Tina Turner released 10 albums as a solo artist and she is considered the Queen of Rock, although most of her albums contain covers of other artists songs. Like Guns N' Roses who were basically inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for one album, 1987's Appetite for Destruction, Tina Turner will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her most important album, 1984's Private Dancer, and she should be inducted.

I laughed out loud at the comment that Tina Turner shouldn't be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because she didn't write her own material. OK, so let's take out Elvis, the Supremes, the Four Tops, the Temptations, Jackie Wilson, the Everly Brothers, etc. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was launched to honor PERFORMERS. As such, Tina Turner is a nonpareil live act who has had a massive influence. The woman taught Jagger how to move on stage, was the inspiration for Beyonce and Rhianna who grew up pretending to be her and became the first female solo artist capable of selling out stadium shows. Big label hype? What a joke. Turner's comeback was a grassroots event that started in the U.K. with sympathetic producers who recognized her underappreciated talent. No one had to buy the songwriters. Bowie, Sting, Bono and the Edge, et al, offered songs to her. It's funny to me that GIANTS of the music industry see Tina Turner as a legendary artist, and piss ants like some of the commentators on here dismiss her. I'll conclude only by saying that Tina Turner's songs from the 80s and 90s continue to enjoy broad appeal and that Ike Turner's slapdash 50s productions are largely ignored by contemporary audiences. The three Ike and Tina songs that most people know are "Fool in Love," which is one of Tina's great vocals, "River Deep, Mountain High," which is essentially a Tina solo that Phil Spector had to credit to Ike and Tina, and "Proud Mary," which is such a great performance that even John Fogerty acknowledges that its really her song now.

If you are talking about me, that's not what I said:

"Like Guns N' Roses who were basically inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for one album, 1987's Appetite for Destruction..."

Well, there were a couple obscure little albums called Use Your Illusion I & II that might have played a part in that, too.

She was dubbed the Queen of Rock years after she left Ike...Why isn't she in as a solo????

Posted by mike sisco on Sunday, 10/5/2014 @ 13:51pm

What can we do as fans to help to get her inducted as a solo? Can fans send a petition or vote?

Posted by Keith Gambill on Tuesday, 07/21/2015 @ 09:12am

I definitely think of all the acts that managed to be more successful in their solo ventures than in a group, Tina deserves a chance and she could get one regarding on where the chips fall with Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan and/or Janet Jackson.

I used to think her getting in with Ike was great because she's fully acknowledged by her name but then I noticed despite being held as the Queen of Rock and Roll that she's actually pretty underrated in terms of her music.

People gloat about her not writing songs once she went on her full-fledged solo career, which lasted 25 years (or 33 years if you technically add "River Deep - Mountain High"), but Tina also had a reputation of interpreting the songs she was given. It's not like someone handed her the songs and said "sing it like this" (that's when she was Ike ironically enough with the exception of the Spector recordings).

She actually, as Smokey Robinson would say about Marvin Gaye before Marvin discovered his true artistry, "Marvin-ize" his songs, Tina would "Tina-ize" whatever song she was given. She arranged a bunch of these songs (that includes the rock songs she did with Ike, since Ike didn't really care too much for hard rock at the time other than that it could give him tons of millions of dollars).

The way she did "Let's Stay Together", "What's Love Got to Do With It" (hear the Bucks Fizz version; very different than when Tina sang it), "Private Dancer", "Better Be Good to Me" (a great dance-rock record when released that turned into a rock arena stomper during her tours), "I Might Have Been Queen", "Steel Claw", "Help", etc., I don't think many could give the songs that rock energy she gave them.

People forget about most of the albums afterwards, but Tina had some good/great moments. The "Break Every Rule" album is pretty underrated. It had "Typical Male" and "Two People", which I consider classics, but it also had songs like "Back Where You Started" (which was one of the best songs Bryan Adams ever did and I'm glad he didn't record himself) and "Break Every Rule" itself.

The "Foreign Affair" album should've been a bigger hit on the pop charts due to Tina finally getting the rock material she can sink her teeth into after years of getting pop/R&B/dance songs that she simply turned into rock. "Steamy Windows" is a pure rocker as is of course "The Best", another of her big arena rock anthems. That one, she actually arranged and produced, and added a bridge to (the original version by Bonnie Tyler didn't include one but Tina added the bridge). "Undercover Agent for the Blues" is another one of those great rock ballads. And then the power ballad "Be Tender With Me Baby", which could've gave her another hit on the rock charts.

I wish she had recorded "Addicted to Love" before Robert Palmer. She owns that record live. Imagine if SHE had recorded it and put it on Break Every Rule!?

Plus being the first female act to sell out rock stadiums is a milestone within itself. How many female artists you know who weren't in a group ever sold out a stadium? And Whitney Houston doesn't count since she only performed in stadiums as part of a concert with other acts. Don't think even Janet did stadium tours. Only one that seemed to follow her was Madonna. And then Beyonce years later and then recently with Taylor Swift, so not that many.

I'm sure after next year's induction ceremony, there's gonna be some articles asking out loud "why hasn't Tina Turner gotten a solo induction to the Hall?"

@DarinRG,

GNR had November Rain on the Illusion albums so yeah that was enough to get them in. But Appetite for Destruction was so huge so of course the Hall was gonna enshrine them. It was expected and rightfully so. Great album.

The honor of being the first female to be inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should go to Carole King or Tina Turner, not Stevie Nicks. Maybe Stevie Nicks' induction is preparation for Carole King and Tina Turner?

Posted by Roy on Sunday, 11/11/2018 @ 09:22am

Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Carole King, all need second inductions before Stevie Nicks!

Posted by Roy on Saturday, 11/17/2018 @ 13:21pm

The Rock Hall had been considering inducting Tina without Ike as far as the first ceremony according to Cleveland.com!

That's actually PRETTY significant!

Sure it would've been a controversial pick and give Ike Turner sycophants even more to whine and moan about Ike "being left behind". When they did finally decided to induct Ike, it was with Tina and he couldn't show up because he was in jail for possession of crack.

It's not too late to give Tina a solo induction. I've played songs from all of the albums she put out under HER name and she's more than deserving of it. The Private Dancer album ALONE is a guarantee for induction at least!

Having seen Tina, the Tina Turner Musical, twice already, I cannot believe that Tina Turner has not been inducted as a solo artist. Last year Stevie Nicks was inducted as a solo artist and had been included previously as Fleetwood Mac. Tina's solo career far eclipsed her time with Ike Turner, and has still sold more tickets as a solo artist than any other solo artist. It's time to recognize her!

I don't know how they induct Stevie Nicks over Tina Turner who had a more successful solo career and having the most inspiring comeback career of any solo artist

Nothing says "sham" quite like the rockhall sending out membership postcards with a picture of Tina Turner on them who they refuse to induct as a solo artist!! This is some bad form Rock Hall.

This is a sign that Tina Turner will be nominated for the 2021 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Jesus, Roy...your comment over two years ago was rather prescient.

Yes, I also predicted that Carole King, Tina Turner, and Dionne Warwick would all get put together on the same ballot this year. All three of them will be inducted in 2021. Too many friends in the industry. It sucks that Tine Turner is going to lose the fan poll to Fela Kuti!!!! She could have been the first woman to win the poll. And Stevie Nicks was winning the fan poll until Def Leppard took over. Same thing with Pat Benatar and Dave Matthews Band.

Please add Break Every Rule to the essential album list! Huge fan here. It's a much more consistent album than Private Dancer, and Tina definitely deserves at least two albums listed in the "essential" list. The 1-2 punch of Typical Male and What You Get is What You See at the start of the album is legendary and deserving enough of your recognition.

How wonderful Tina Turner has been awarded induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Some people feel Tina is the Queen of Rock, Others refer to her as the Grandmother of Rock and Roll. Even recent appearances proved she still has the Rock in her. Congratulations, Tina! You are most deserving!

I find it unbelievable that Tina Turner and Carole King have had to wait so long to be inducted into the H.O.F. The ultimate insult is that they were on the same ballot as Jay Z, who managed to get in straight away.

Posted by StunningStocktaker on Wednesday, 11/24/2021 @ 10:42am

CORRECTION

The Robert Palmer version (1980), and the Tina Turner version (1982) of the song, Johnny and Mary, was written completely by Robert Palmer (lyrics and music).

The 1983 version of Johnny and Mary by Melissa Manchester had additional lyrics by Bernie Taupin.

The Robert Palmer and Tina Turner versions of Johnny and Mary will be taken off of the list of songs with lyrics by Bernie Taupin for artists other than Elton John.

The first solo women to sell out stadiums were Linda Ronstadt and Pat Benatar: Ronstadt did so in the late '70s, and Benatar in the early '80s (I attended one of these in 1983). Stevie Nicks may have been able to also do so on the strength of her '81 and '83 platinum successes, but I am absotively sure about Ronstadt and Benatar.
